The wandering stars — planets and the almanac

Learning outcomes & permitted supports
  • Distinguish inferior and superior planets; use elongation limits (Mercury ≈28°, Venus ≈47°) and the midnight test.
  • Explain retrograde motion as line-of-sight overtake centred on opposition — no epicycles, no reversing orbits.
  • Read planet GHA/dec/SD/HP/magnitude from the engine's almanac strip and form LHA for any longitude.
  • Tell evening star from morning star from the sign of elongation, and explain why Venus is brightest as a crescent.

Orbits are the REAL sampled ellipses, not circles. The blue arc at Earth is the elongation — the one angle that decides where in your sky the planet can be.

Mars never reverses its orbit. Between sight lines 3 and 5 the FASTER Earth overtakes on the inside, so the line of sight swings backward against the stars — the loop is centred on opposition (2027-02-19, engine-found), exactly when the planet is nearest, brightest, and on your meridian at midnight.

Mercury & Venus — chained to the Sun

Venus swings out to ±47° and no further — she can NEVER stand on your midnight meridian. Mercury stays within ±28°, hugging twilight. Rings mark greatest elongations (engine-found; the golden suite pins them within minutes of the independent ephemeris).

Venus is brightest as a fat CRESCENT (~27% lit), not when full: near superior conjunction she is full but six times smaller; near inferior conjunction huge but a sliver. The product of size × lit fraction peaks about 36 days either side of inferior conjunction.
